They provide safe electrical distribution, and also have built in weather proofing and circuit protection. They have access features that are user friendly.
How Outdoor Power Pedestals Work
An electrical power pedestal is connected to the facility's main electrical service by buried conduit near its base. The path of power is as follows:
Step 01
Power Entry
Electrical supply is received via the base through underground conduit and protected from atmospheric exposure.
Step 02
Main Breaker
The electric current flows to the main disconnect breaker at this point, which, when actuated, shuts down the whole pedestal for maintenance or any eventualities.
Step 03
Distribution
The format of distribution here involves internal bus bars distributing power to the branch circuits, each individually protected by its breaker.
Step 04
Gfci Protection
Ground fault circuit interrupters are always watching for imbalances in current that imply a leakage current, activating within milliseconds upon sensing this condition in order to trip.
Step 05
User Access
Those using the equipment string together in weatherproof receptacles and tap into adequate power allocated specially for their own needs.

What Is A Power Pedestal?
A power pedestal is a substantial and standing unit, assuring secure and convenient provision of electric power service to outdoor and semi-outdoor regions. Its unmoving presence is usually discovered in marinas, scooter lots and especially camping sites. In addition, cruise ships, motorhomes, and all other camping appliances depend on these power posts for functionality. They are made to meet the outdoor electrical needs in a great and effective way thanks to their effective design for convenience and safety.
Power Pedestal With Meter
Standing on its own and serving as an outdoor power source, the pedestal with logger is obviously built to allow the provision of electric power uninterrupted. Gas and electricity meters that enable the accurate recording and monitoring of usage, are built into these pedestals, making them a common feature in RV parks, marinas, campgrounds, and other small commercial facilities. They are an effective power distribution management, making them a necessity at places where electricity service is a necessity and requires accountability.
What Is An Electrical Pedestal Used For?
An electrical pedestal, sometimes called a power pedestal or power pillar, is an essential device that safely distributes electricity from outdoor and partially enclosed sources. These aesthetic pedestals typically come with power sockets, meter boxes and connective links for other resources such as water and even internet. In most cases, this structure can be found in marinas, automobile recreational vehicle locations, camping grounds, and private docks where power is conveniently available for vessels. Customer Success Stories: Reliable Outdoor Power Pedestal Solutions
Case Study 1: Marina Power Pedestal
Client: Coastal Bay Marina, Florida, USA | Project Type: Marina Power Pedestal Replacement
Target Keywords: marina power pedestals, shore power pedestal, 316 stainless steel power pedestal, dock power pedestal
Target Keywords: marina power pedestals, shore power pedestal, 316 stainless steel power pedestal, dock power pedestal
The Challenge
The Coastal Bay Marina, a 156-slip facility on Florida’s Gulf Coast, was experiencing a shore power crisis. Their power pedestals, made of aluminum and constructed 15 years ago, were corroding due to the effects of saltwater. Marina manager Michael Torres described the situation:
“We were spending $8,000-$12,000 monthly just on emergency repairs. Boat owners complained about unreliable shore power. We had two near-miss electrical incidents, which could have been catastrophic. Our insurance company threatened to drop our coverage unless we upgraded our electricals.”
— Michael Torres, Marina Manager
Core Problems Identified
- Failing receptacles due to galvanic corrosion
- GFCI non-compliance under the updated NEC Article 555
- Insufficient service capacity (30A) for today’s yachts needing 50A/100A service
- Water intrusion into electrical compartments, despite the NEMA 3R rating.
- Power quality with intra-electronics damage.
Our Solution
Following a thorough site assessment, we customized a power pedestal solution for the marina to alleviate the specified problems.
Product Specifications
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Material | 316L Marine-Grade Stainless Steel |
| Finish | #4 Brushed with Clear Powder Coat |

Why 316L Stainless Steel?
We recommended 316L Stainless Steel specifically for this saltwater "situation" because it is better than 304 grade for this type of environment. 316L has more molybdenum than 304, which has better "pitting" corrosion which is better for facilities that are 500ft +- from saltwater.
GFCI Compliance Update
At this point, our pedestals have integrated equipment level GFCI, which is fully compliant with the 2023 version of the NEC, Article 555.3, which covers compliance of the electrical systems at the marinas, setting forth specific requirements regarding GFCI to provide 30mA ground fault protection (this is better than 5mA personnel protection) specifically for the purpose of preventing Electric Shock Drowning (ESD).

Target Keywords: landscape power pedestals, outdoor pedestals, power pedestals, campus custom pedestals
The Challenge
Midwest State University engages in outdoor learning and gathering spaces and is redesigning their central quad. For student power access points, landscape architects from Patterson Design Group scheduled five acres of space for laptop charging, power for outdoor events, food trucks, seasonal lighting, and maintenance tools.
“Power pedestals should match our contemporary campus's aesthetics. We could not accept standard industrial looking units. We want pedestals in minimalist designs with brushed stainless steel, that will seamlessly blend with our new outdoor furniture and give power access to concealed areas.”
- Sarah Patterson, Principal, Patterson Design Group
Our Solution
We interacted with Patterson Design Group for three design iterations for us to develop a custom landscape power pedestal that satisfies both design and power access needs.

"These power pedestals are precisely what we imagined—operational infrastructure that complements our landscape design rather than distracts from it. The level outlet covers and brushed stainless steel finish are in perfect alignment with our outdoor furniture and light poles. Our client loves it."
—Sarah Patterson, Principal, Patterson Design Group
"The students appreciate outdoor power access. We notice that students frequently charge their laptops across the quad. The pedestals have gone without issues for large events, including our fall festival with food trucks. The vandal-resistant design has proven itself; even with high student traffic, we have had no incidents of damage."

Frequently Asked Questions
Outdoor power pedestals are free-standing permanent structures built to provide power access in outdoor locations. They contain power outlets and other receptacles inside a weatherproof external case and provide features to organize and manage electric cables. The pedestals reliably connect to equipment used for landscape lighting, outdoor events, and charging equipment. The range of configurations and weatherproof designs offered by manufacturers like Legrand provide operational flexibility to a wide variety of applications.
Outdoor power pedestals can sometimes can be designed to charge e-bikes, light electric vehicles, and other portable devices through the use of 30A receptacles or dedicated electric vehicle (EV) charging components at some of the outlets. Specialized charging hardware designed to pair with portable fast charging systems is commonly required to do fast charging of electric vehicles, and some of the charging systems provide a standard power supply to accessories and are designed to accommodate a wide variety of components.
Standard maintenance for outdoor power pedestals involves cover and seal inspection, receptacle checking, GFCI testing, and cable and device connection checking; as well as corrosion inspection and damage inspection due to the environment. Clear the pedestal and surrounding area of debris, check the concrete base for clearance, and keep the pedestal compliant with local regulations for periodic electrical inspections. If the pedestal is intended for public or event use, consider using tamper resistant cover outlet options and lockable cover outlet options for safe access to power.
Outdoor power pedestals are units that provide power and are built to distribute electricity to users safely. They include protective enclosures that are weatherproof and house multiple receptacles that are protected through GFCI circuit breakers. From a main power source, they distribute electricity to end users. They are used in marinas, RV parks, public parks, and commercial plazas. They are a much safer option than standard extension cords.
Outdoor power pedestals can be used in a variety of applications. For example, power pedestals can be used specifically for marinas, RV parks, landscapes, and charge EVs. For example, power pedestals for marinas include corrosion resistant materials for docks and yacht clubs. RV park options have campground configurations of 50, 30, and 20 amps. Landscape power pedestals include decorative options for parks and commercial use. For outdoor events, commercial power pedestals are available, and for EVs, pedestals are available with charging capabilities.
Outdoor power pedestals are usually made from stainless steel 316, aluminum, or powder-coated steel. Stainless steel 316 is ideal for corrosive environments, especially marine environments with saltwater. For more cost-effective marine application solutions, aluminum is a more lightweight option. For other applications, budget, location, and architecture will drive selection. Marine applications will almost always require premium aluminum or stainless steel.
Choosing outdoor power pedestals involves a number of considerations including the application type (marina, RV park, landscaping, etc.), the amperage level and how it’s divided, environmental factors, and what the compliance requirements are. Out of these, perhaps the most important is the application type as each type is served by different classes of pedestals. Keep in mind number of outlets, metering, and how you want it mounted (surface mount or direct bury). When in doubt, talk to the manufacturers to understand their customization and UL certs to best understand how to favor the pedestals to your specific project requirements.
Sure. Depending on the requirements of the specific project, outdoor power pedestals can be customized. Some manufacturers grants OEM/ODM for outdoor power pedestals to personalize enclosures, adjust to various amperages, add customized logos and color finishes, as well as add extra features like lighting and smart meters. Custom power pedestals are in high demand for commercial developments, themed parks, and large marinas for tailored product and design integration.
Circuit breaker protection in the case of an electrical overload, a GCFI (Ground Circuit Fault Interrupter) to protect against electrical shock, and weatherproof enclosures that meet NEMA standards are the basics of outdoor power pedestals safety features. Additional safety features include surge protection, tamper-proof receptacles, and thorough grounding system. To meet NEC electrical safety standards, and to protect equipment and users, all of these features should be included.
Outdoor power pedestals can be installed via surface mounts or direct-bury methods. Surface mounts are secured by concrete pedestals which are bolted to the surface. This method is best paired with older, existing infrastructure. Direct-bury methods give a sleeker appearance, as the concrete is buried, and the pedestal is inserted into the ground. Regardless of the method, the electrical connections must be done by a certified electrician in accordance to NEC and local electrical codes.
