Custom EV Charging Pedestals for the Huawei Research Campus in Hangzhou

Custom EV charging pedestals are usually specified on protection and durability. When JIYA Intelligent supplied a unit for the Huawei Research Campus in Hangzhou, the brief inverted that order. This was a commercial EV charging project inside an operating Huawei research campus, where the equipment would stand a few meters from landscaped walkways and glass facades. The question was not only whether the pedestal could deliver power in an outdoor environment, but whether it could do so without disturbing the design of the space around it.

That shift in requirement is worth examining, because the outdoor power distribution equipment that suits a campground or a marina is not automatically suited to a corporate campus. The differences are not only cosmetic. They change what gets specified, and they change when the decisions have to be made.

Custom EV Charging Pedestals for the Huawei Research Campus in Hangzhou

Project Background

The Huawei Research Campus in Hangzhou is a dense environment. Office buildings, planted borders, pedestrian routes, and vehicle access all occupy the same footprint, and the landscape design is a deliberate investment rather than an afterthought.

Huawei set out three requirements at the start of the project:

  • The equipment had to fit the campus design. Conventional industrial charging equipment tends to be large and visually prominent. Placed between glass facades and clipped hedges, it reads as an addition rather than part of the scheme.
  • One unit had to serve a mixed user group. The charging points would serve fleet vehicles under central management, as well as staff and visitors. Those are different loads: a service vehicle needs a sustained high-power charge, while a commuter may only need to top up a laptop, a phone, or an electric bicycle.
  • Construction had to suit a site in full operation. The campus runs every day. Work could not disrupt normal use, so the equipment had to be compact and the installation fast and safe.

How Customization Addressed the Brief

Standard plug-and-play units could not meet all three requirements at once. JIYA joined the project at the planning stage and worked through a full OEM scope, from exterior design to the arrangement of outlets on the faceplate. The result was a customized GRES801515S pedestal.

The delivered unit has three defining characteristics:

A Restrained Exterior

The design took material away rather than adding it. Instead of a tall post, the unit uses a low, compact form that reduces visual weight. The exterior is finished in matte black, which does not reflect glare and sits comfortably against the shadow and planting of the surrounding buildings. It reads as part of the streetscape rather than an object placed in it.

Two Outlet Types on One Unit

To serve two different user groups from one device, the faceplate carries two outlet positions:

  • A high-power outlet, specified for the Huawei campus fleet, including service and patrol vehicles. This provides a steady supply for vehicles that support daily operations.
  • A general-purpose outlet for personal devices on the campus, including laptops, phones, and electric bicycles used for short commutes.

Two outlet types on one unit

Combining both in one unit improves use of space and avoids installing several single-purpose devices in a confined area.

A Durable Core Behind a Soft Exterior

The exterior is restrained, but the construction follows JIYA’s outdoor manufacturing approach. The enclosure uses thickened 304 stainless steel, and in high-corrosion environments, 316 stainless steel is available as an option. The internal wiring and protective devices are assembled before the unit leaves the factory.

The Huawei campus is in a region with a long rainy season and hot summers, and the equipment sees frequent plugging and unplugging. In that pattern of use, the stability of the internal electrical assembly and the ground fault protection matter more than appearance.

Technical Specifications

The following figures come from JIYA’s outdoor charging and distribution platform. The GRES801515S is configured to project requirements, so the table describes the available specifications rather than a single fixed build.

Cooling Metal body conduction with natural convection, supported by targeted ventilation openings
Protection Short circuit, overload, and earth leakage protection. Upstream device rated 30 mA / 0.1 s
Installation Surface mounted with anchor bolts (short program) or cast into a concrete base (3 to 5 days)
Factory state Internal modules pre-assembled. On-site work is limited to fixing the unit and connecting supply. Roughly 1 to 2 people per day per pedestal

Technical Advantages

The specifications above translate into a set of practical advantages for a site in this region:

  • Industrial-grade protection and wide temperature operation. The enclosure is rated IP54 or IP65 depending on model, with outlets at IP66 and above. Combined with the -20°C to +60°C operating range and long-duration salt spray testing, the unit covers the wet spring season, high summer temperatures, and humid coastal conditions.
  • Structure and durability. A 304 stainless steel one-piece body with an impact rating of IK10 depending on structural design. This matters on a campus where vehicles, pedestrians, and frequent plugging share the same space.
  • Electrical safety. Short circuit, overload, and earth leakage protection, with an upstream device rated 30 mA / 0.1 s, consistent with outdoor electrical safety requirements.
  • Low construction disturbance. Internal modules are assembled at the factory, so site work is limited to connecting supply and fixing the unit. The surface-mounted option keeps the program short, which suits a campus already in operation.
  • Environmental options. A surge protection module can be specified for areas with frequent lightning, and a heat dissipation module (thermostatic fan or cooling assembly) for consistently hot locations.

Campground Pedestals and Commercial Pedestals: Where the Logic Differs

This project illustrates how assessment criteria change with the setting.

In campground and marina work, equipment often operates unattended in remote locations, exposed to salt air and cold. Clients weigh environmental tolerance, corrosion resistance, and remote metering/payment capability first. You can learn more about these requirements in our guide to RV parks and campgrounds solutions.

At Huawei, the equipment passes hundreds of people every day, and appearance becomes part of the acceptance criteria. A unit whose color and form do not sit well with a landscape design representing a significant investment will not pass review, regardless of its technical performance. Campus projects are also usually planned centrally by a property or facilities team, placing weight on a compact footprint and how equipment reflects corporate identity.

A non-standard color and compact form cannot be produced by painting and trimming a standard unit after delivery. These are design decisions taken at the order stage. JIYA models the enclosure color, proportions, outlet layout, and logo position in three dimensions and confirms them visually before production, fixing details before tooling and production runs.

Summary

The Huawei project in Hangzhou shows how flexible manufacturing applies to outdoor power distribution and EV charging. It also offers a reference point for corporate campuses, commercial complexes, and public facilities such as municipal parks and car parks planning charging infrastructure.

For decision-makers specifying charging for a campus, public space, or commercial building, working with a manufacturer that holds OEM and ODM capabilities from the design stage is the practical route. Appearance and function have to be resolved together on the drawing, because alternatives are expensive later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the enclosure color and form be fully customized?

Yes. JIYA provides OEM and ODM work covering color, proportions, and form, whether that means matte black, a corporate color, or a specific low-profile or post design. Requirements are confirmed at the order and design stage so that tooling and lead time can be planned.

Can one unit serve vehicles and personal devices at the same time?

Yes. Different outlet types can be combined on one pedestal, for example an industrial outlet alongside a domestic outlet, with independent circuit protection for each. This lets a single position serve a mixed user group.

Is installation difficult on a site that is already operating?

The GRES801515S uses a highly integrated modular design with internal wiring and assembly completed before dispatch. On-site work is limited to fixing the unit and connecting the supply. The footprint is small and the program is short, which keeps disruption to normal operations to a minimum.

Can breakers, meters, and outlets be supplied to a nominated brand?

Yes. Breakers (single-phase 16 A to 63 A, three-phase 32 A to 125 A), multi-function meters (single-phase DIN rail or WiFi smart meter), and IP-rated outlets can be supplied to a nominated brand to align with project inspection requirements.

How is the enclosure protected outdoors?

The enclosure is rated IP54 or IP65 depending on model configuration, with outlets rated IP66 and above and industrial outlets to IP67. The unit runs from -20°C to +60°C and is subject to long-duration salt spray testing. The body is 304 stainless steel, with 316 stainless steel available for coastal or high-corrosion sites.
